Australian politicians are almost always opting
to fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded trips, despite Virgin offering
cheaper tickets.
Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips
last year despite it not always being the cheapest route, according to travel data provided to the government.
While politicians and their staffers are required to book
the cheapest flight, it also has to be the most efficient, with Qantas offering the most
routes between major cities.
MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like ordinary Aussies can, but they
can can receive lifetime status credits, which
allows access to airport lounges and flight upgrades.
‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas in securing bookings by parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review.
‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’
Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government
officials which will be conducted by the Department of Finance
this year, despite there being just two months left of
2024.
Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be put
down to the airline’s exclusive invite-only ‘Chairman’s Lounge’.

in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge has long been veiled in secrecy.

VIP clubs – in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports – are suitably discreet.
Though, once inside, the designer lounges are immediately more ostentatious, with free à
la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines and

attendants.
Membership to the club is ‘priceless’ – it cannot be bought for any amount of money nor obtained via any amount of frequent flyers points.

Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral commission extended the vote
for a second time, giving Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.
In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling
station picked to reopen, about 60 people showed up
on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at 4:

The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:00
pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had exams the

Bros. released the film in 4,102 locations in North
America. About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.
Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens,
bringing its total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two weeks, Joker
2 will also open in Japan and China.
Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its
second weekend, bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made over $100

took third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers
One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.

person. And yet people still flocked to see what the fuss
was about. Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture
and best director, and three wins. It also made over
$1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, until

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to
premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner
spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring
the film to Venice.

history as the film bombed at the box office on opening night.

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October
4, but it only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office,
per The Hollywood Reporter.
Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which
had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while
Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn).
However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for
a comic book movie.
Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also
received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a
C+.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and
a critic score of 32%.
The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50
million at the domestic box office during the entirety of opening weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70
million – but the number has since drastically dropped.
Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters – and eventually
landed a little over $1 billion in the global box office.
The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips – had a budget of between $55 and
$70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million.
The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th Venice International
Film Festival.
Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered
an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score.
The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.

its predecessor’.
Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two stars but
credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following
the first movie’s $1billion success.
Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said
although Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings
up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no
idea what to do with her.
Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie
proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

and shakers where secret deals were done in private luxury first exploded
into the public eye back in 2007.
Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of
dollars wining and dining the nation’s political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges was
relatively unknown.
It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the
CEO of Qantas had even started, when he was boss of the
comparatively lowly budget airline, Jetstar.
And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls leading up to an election in next year,
the prospects back in 2007 were rosy for Labor.
The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that would
see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and John Howard lose his own seat.
The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t about a prime minister’s privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly both members during their terms as PM.
But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed a politically charged remark made within the club’s hallowed walls, the cat was out of the bag.
The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change the
policies it campaigned on if it won government – did not deter his party from romping
in on election day.
In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese
about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt,
and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.

The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark, Steve Price had to explain what the
private enclave actually was.
In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate frequent flyers lounge away
from the crowded normal Qantas Club.
‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson.
‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’
In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was also
a member of lounge.
Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness to the
remark Price said Garrett had made.
Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors and performers,
and well-known writers and sports people are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership of around
6000.
Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a confidential conversation in a private place, but
which exposed him to criticism over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his
radio show.

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge ‘which most of
their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests that year included Liberal MPs of the day, Philip
Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.
Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob
McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of Grange
hermitage as a gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.
Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson told Nine:
‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by invitation only
and it is reviewed periodically.’
Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the
country has accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.
Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very high-end perk’
gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over
the country’s politicians.
They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new
book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which has stirred up the controversy.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives and the Senate –
revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.
Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements.
At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his upgrades ‘have been declared
as appropriate. What’s appropriate is transparency.’
Apart from the PM, members include every one of his
22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant
ministers.

The film earned $18.3 million at the box office according to The Numbers.
Landing in third place was Joker: Folie à Deux.
After winning the box office competition during its debut weekend could not overcome
the bad reviews, enduring an 82-percent decline in ticket sales.
The movie collected only $7.055 million, in spite of being in more than four thousand theaters across the US.

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.
It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to
break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.
sources claim the number is $375 million.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying
‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives”
are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’
‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and
ancillary run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed
$51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of
release.

Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham, is one of the world’s great cheeses, and this is a soufflé
of quiet majesty. A mushroom soup is equally splendid, managing to be both light
and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with bubble
and squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort
by way of Lewis.
There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision. Duck à
l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the sauce just the right side of bitter.
It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked
with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of lamb, four vast just-pink
slices, drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously intense
of gravies; by its side, a tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.
Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp,
with damson sorbet (this part of the Lake District
is famed for its damsons); along with a banana soufflé,
this time the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and a pot of sticky-toffee
sauce to pour deep into its molten centre. This is good old-fashioned food,
immaculately done, in the sort of pub designed for lingering.
It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start.
But first, another bottle of wine. Dinners like
this are too rare to be rushed.

Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading 12 pips lower than the previous

of China (PBOC) set the midpoint rate, around which the yuan is allowed
to trade in a 2% band, at 7.0568 per dollar, only 3 pips weaker than a Reuters’ estimate.
China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time since Sept.
13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning
streak, after officials on Tuesday failed to offer much
new on stimulus plans to revive the economy. The
yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month, due
to broad dollar strength, but the currency has 0.5% firmed
for the year-to-date.
China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside surprise from expected fiscal
stimulus news, said UBS strategists led by Rohit Arora, adding
that the offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward is unattractive.
“Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,” the strategists
said.
Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional stimulus measures
that could help further lift China asset sentiment.
Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well if local equities remain supported,
similar to what happened in Nov. 2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note to clients.
The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar, up about 0.09% in Asian trade.

Former first lady Melania Trump said she was completely comfortable with posing nude during her modeling days.
In her memoir Melania, which was released Tuesday, she recounts
how her nude photos were put on the cover of The New York Post during the closing weeks of the 2016 presidential election.
The tabloid used the ‘disgusting heaadline,’ as Melania described it, ‘Menage à Trump.’
‘My upbringing in Europe had fostered a different perspective on nudity, a more open and accepting attitude,’ she wrote.
‘We were accustomed to beaches where nudity was commonplace,
a natural and uncontroversial aspect of life.’
She noted how ‘attitudes toward the female body in the United States
were starkly different.’

it premiered, with one user branding it as a ‘bore’ and another claiming it had ‘no plot.’
Many social media users have also slammed the movie’s final scene, which saw
main character Arthur Fleck (portrayed by Joaquin) brutally stabbed to death by a fellow inmate.
This meant that the man that audiences had been watching over the course of the
two movies was never the Joker at all, but in fact,
the infamous villain from the Batman series was really just the
random inmate who killed Arthur in the last moments of the film.
The shocking twist left numerous viewers unsatisfied,
and they took to social media to share their frustration.

It had a lackluster $40 million debut at the box office in its first
weekend, and has a low rating of 33 percent and 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Undoing much of the goodwill from its predecessor, the sequel convolutes what could have been a unique character study into a bloated encore that goes out with a whimper,’ reads one review.
Another critic wrote, ‘This movie is a disjointed mess and a waste of time.
It’s just tired, not particularly interesting, but it does look good from a production design standpoint.’

by critics, as they cast doubt on Lady Gaga’s ‘thin’ role in the film

Harley Quinn. The pair hit it off at a music therapy class, and are soon mutually smitten, but
Lee makes it clear that she loves the dangerously charismatic Joker, ‘clown prince of crime’, not the gloomily introspective Arthur.
‘Which is more real: the psychopath wearing the mask or the vulnerable fellow behind
it? Either way, identity confusion is the theme of
this film, which keeps being billed as a musical.
‘It’s not, really, although music looms large as an expression of Arthur
and Lee’s burgeoning love for one another. And there are a couple of
swooning dance routines that make them look like psychotic
versions of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in La La Land (2016).
